The age when the motor car began to change everyday British life.

At the beginning of the 1920s, motoring remained an expensive pursuit. Cars were often associated with wealth, while many people relied on trains, bicycles and public transport.

The arrival of smaller, more affordable vehicles began changing that. Introduced in 1922, the Austin Seven was designed to provide practical personal transport at a more accessible price.

With its compact dimensions, straightforward engineering and relatively economical running costs, the Seven helped introduce a new generation of motorists to the freedom of the open road.

BUILT FOR A NEW BRITAIN

Following the Second World War, British manufacturers faced major challenges. Raw materials were limited, production facilities were changing and exporting became increasingly important.

Despite these difficulties, 1948 became a remarkable year for British motoring.

The original Land Rover was unveiled as a versatile working vehicle capable of tackling difficult terrain. Its practicality and rugged construction helped establish a name that would become famous around the world.

The Morris Minor also appeared in 1948. Designed under the direction of Alec Issigonis, it offered practical family transport with distinctive styling and modern thinking.

By the late 1950s, Britain was entering a new period of increasing car ownership. Demand for compact, economical transport created opportunities for innovative engineering.

In 1959, the original Mini was introduced. Developed by Alec Issigonis, it used a transverse-mounted engine and front-wheel drive to make excellent use of its compact dimensions.

The Mini quickly became more than practical transport. Its distinctive handling, character and design helped make it one of Britain's most recognisable cars.

It would later enjoy considerable motorsport success and become closely associated with British culture during the 1960s.

WHEN ENGINEERING BECAME ART

The 1960s brought some of Britain's most celebrated sports cars, combining elegant design with impressive performance and engineering.

In 1961, Jaguar unveiled the E-Type. Its distinctive long bonnet, flowing bodywork and performance made it an immediate automotive icon.

The MGB, introduced in 1962, brought accessible open-top sports-car motoring to enthusiasts in Britain and abroad.

Meanwhile, the Mini Cooper demonstrated the potential of clever engineering on the world's rally stages, becoming one of the most memorable competition cars of the decade.

THE MACHINES THAT BECAME LEGENDS

From performance icons to treasured collector vehicles.

The 1970s brought major changes to the British motor industry, with new challenges, changing consumer tastes and increasingly competitive international markets.

Yet it also saw the development of some truly memorable vehicles. The original Range Rover, introduced in 1970, combined off-road ability with greater comfort and refinement.

The Aston Martin V8 helped define British grand touring, while the Lotus Esprit, introduced during the decade, became famous for its dramatic wedge-shaped styling.
